PVC: what it is and how to care for it

PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is a porous plastic used in some anal toys because it's cheap to mould and holds detail well. It cannot be sterilised — the material has microscopic gaps that trap bacteria even after washing — so it needs a fresh condom each time you use it, and it should never be shared between people without one.

Why it matters

The appeal of PVC is price. You can find plugs and probes for under twenty dollars, and if you're curious but not yet committed, that feels like a safer bet than spending three times as much on silicone. The trade-off is care: you cannot boil it, you cannot put it through a proper sterilisation cycle, and you cannot treat it the way you would a non-porous toy.

That does not mean it is unsafe if you follow the rules. Use it with one person only. Put a condom on it every time — even if it is just you — and bin the condom afterwards. Wash it with mild soap and warm water, let it dry completely, and store it somewhere clean and dry. Do all of that and a PVC toy will serve you well for occasional use.

Where PVC stops making sense is when the price climbs. If you are paying thirty dollars or more, you are in silicone territory — and silicone lasts years, cleans properly, and asks far less of you. A cheap PVC plug is a reasonable way to find out whether you like the shape. An expensive PVC plug is just expensive PVC.
