Polypropylene: what it is and how to care for it
Polypropylene is a firm, non-porous plastic used in some anal toys — typically beads and plugs where rigidity matters. It cleans easily with soap and warm water, holds its shape under pressure, and costs less than silicone. You'll find it in beginner sets and travel-friendly designs where weight and flexibility aren't priorities.
Why it matters
Non-porous means it won't harbour bacteria if you clean it properly, which makes it a safe choice for anal play. Soap and warm water after each use is all it needs — no special cleaner, no guesswork. It won't degrade or go tacky over time the way some rubbers do.
The trade-off is comfort. Polypropylene is rigid, so it doesn't flex with your body the way silicone does. That firmness is useful if you want something that stays exactly where you put it, but it also means you'll feel every edge and contour. Use plenty of water-based lube and take your time — the material won't give, so you have to.
It's also light, which some people love for travel and others find makes a plug feel insubstantial. If you want weight and presence, glass or steel will suit you better. If you want something that packs small and cleans fast, polypropylene does the job.
